What a home battery actually does
A home battery stores electricity so you can use it later. In a solar household, that usually means capturing energy your panels generate during the day and drawing on it in the evening, when the sun has gone but the kettle, lights and television have not.
Without storage, surplus daytime energy flows back to the grid and you're credited for it through a feed-in tariff. With a battery, more of that energy stays in the house. Whether that shift is worthwhile depends entirely on your circumstances — which is the thread running through everything below.
The terminology, explained plainly
Battery conversations are thick with units, and the jargon does a lot of quiet work. A few terms are worth knowing before you read any product page.
- Capacity (kWh) — how much energy a battery can hold, much like the size of a water tank.
- Power (kW) — how quickly it can deliver that energy, like the width of the tap.
- Depth of discharge — how much of the stored energy you can actually use without shortening its life.
- Round-trip efficiency — the share of energy you get back out after putting it in; some is always lost.
- Cycles — one charge and discharge; manufacturers rate batteries for a number of these.
Backup versus self-consumption
These two goals get conflated constantly, yet they pull in different directions. Self-consumption is about using more of your own solar across an ordinary day to lean less on the grid. Backup is about keeping some power flowing when the grid goes down.
Not every battery setup provides backup during an outage, and the ones that do often require extra equipment and deliver power only to selected circuits. If riding out blackouts matters to you, it's worth naming that goal early, because it changes the conversation.
Being clear about which goal you're chasing — everyday savings, outage resilience, or both — is one of the most useful things you can do before comparing products.
When a battery may make sense
Batteries tend to suit households that already use a fair amount of energy after dark, that generate more daytime solar than they can use, and that place real value on independence from the grid. They make less sense where most energy is already used during sunlight hours, or where the daily surplus is small.
There's no universal answer, and anyone offering one without asking about your routine is guessing. The honest position is that storage is a question of fit, not a default upgrade.
Lifespan considerations
Batteries degrade gradually rather than failing overnight. Their usable capacity slowly shrinks with each cycle and with age, which is why warranties are typically framed around both a number of years and a retained-capacity figure.
When weighing any storage decision, it helps to think across the whole expected life of the battery rather than the first sunny month — including how its performance is likely to taper over time.
Safety guidance
Modern home batteries are built to recognised standards, but they remain significant pieces of electrical equipment. Installation location, ventilation, clearances and clear isolation points all matter, and the relevant rules have tightened in recent years.
- Only ever have storage installed by appropriately accredited and licensed professionals.
- Understand where the system's isolation and shutoff points are.
- Keep the installer's documentation and follow any manufacturer guidance on placement and clearances.
- Treat any unusual heat, smell or behaviour as a reason to call a professional, not to investigate yourself.
Comparing technologies
Most home batteries today use lithium-ion chemistry, but within that there are meaningful differences in chemistry, form factor and how the system is controlled. Rather than chasing a single 'best' product, it's more useful to compare on the things that affect you: usable capacity, power output, warranty terms, backup capability and how well the system integrates with the solar you have or plan to install.
Where household energy is heading
The home-energy picture keeps shifting. Electric vehicles, smarter tariffs, and the idea of homes coordinating with the grid all point toward storage playing a larger role over time. None of that means rushing in — but it's useful context for a decision meant to last a decade or more.
